A Lucky Lady
It is considered to be good luck to see a chimney sweep on your wedding day, and most certainly to shake his hand or be kissed by him! To ensure a very
happy and successful union, in Great Britain, a chimney sweep is usually in attendance at a wedding.
Long ago, it is said, a chimney sweep lost his footing while sweeping a chimney and fell off a roof. He fortunately was caught on a gutter when a young lady reached her hand through a window and pulled him to safety. It is said “she swept him off his feet”. They fell deeply in love and then wed, living happily-ever-after.

Call Us TodayThe Curious Tradition of Lucky Chimney Sweep
Dating back to the 1700’s, legend has it, as King
George II was riding through the forest on a procession, a growling dog approached scaring
his horse. When losing control of his horse, fortune would have it, a chimney sweep happened to be nearby and came to the kings rescue, quickly bringing the horse under control and saving the king from his certain demise. As a thanks, the king declared all chimney sweeps to be lucky, with the news traveling all across Europe.
Symbol of Good Luck
In Germany, and all of Eastern Europe, chimney sweeps still wear an all black uniform with golden jacket buttons and a black top hat! It is considered to be good luck to rub one of your buttons when passing one by. To this day, depictions of chimney sweeps are a symbol of good luck. Around New Year’s each year, a popular gift is a small chimney sweep ornament and marzipan candy in the shape of a sweep!
